According to studio estimations, Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was the top-grossing US film for the third week in a row.
On the weekend beginning Friday (20 May), the film earned a total of $31.6 million (£25.2 million) in 4,534 North American theaters, breaking the $800 million (£637.6 million) barrier.
Doctor Strange 2 was the first Marvel film to hit theaters this year, after Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021.

When Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on Friday, May 27 – nearly 40 years after the original – Doctor Strange 2, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch in the title character of Dr Stephen Strange, is likely to be displaced.
Cruise was asked whether he had contemplated debuting Top Gun: Maverick on streaming sites when the epidemic continued to push back its release date during his short tour at the Cannes film festival last week, where it had its European premiere.
“That was never going to happen,” Cruise stated emphatically. “I produce feature films for the large screen.”
On its opening weekend, Downtown Abbey: A New Era grossed $16 million in ticket sales from 3,820 theaters across the region, following Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on the list.
