The eligibility criteria for The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction require artists to have released their first record 25 years before their induction. The first-timers on the list include Jay-Z, The Go-Gos, and The Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters will become a two-time inductee after his first nomination in 2014 with Nirvana. Other inductees who have made the list two times include Tina Turner, inducted with Ike and Tina Turner in 1991 and Carole King, who was inducted with Gerry Goffin in 1990.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction honors bands and solo artists who have created original, impactful, and influential music, as well as non-performing industry professionals who have had a significant influence on the creative development and growth of Rock & Roll music. Other categories for the award include the Musical Excellence Award, which honors artists, musicians, songwriters and producers who have created influential, originality and impactful music and the Early Influence Award, which is given to a performing artist or group with music and performance style that has influenced, impacted and inspired youth culture through Rock & Roll music.
To choose the inductees, an international voting body of over 1,200 artists made up of current inductees, historians, and members of the music industry received ballots. They used factors like an artist’s musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation, and superiority in style and technique are taken into consideration. The inductees were announced live on SiriusXM’s Volume channel and Rock Hall’s social media channels and on the morning show Feedback, hosted by Nik Carter and Lori Majewski, which featured special guest Joel Peresman, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation’s CEO.
