If you’re in the market for another vehicle, you may be looking at hybrids and electric vehicles. Parents looking for a first car for a teenager will first be focused on safety; the limited range of some EVs might also increase your peace of mind! Regardless of your reason, an electric vehicle can offer you both safety and fuel savings. Edmunds has a resourceful buying guide for EVs.

Why you should buy an electric vehicle as your first vehicle

Fuel is not getting any cheaper. A vehicle can be a hefty investment, so if you’re working hard to pay off your first vehicle, an electric vehicle can help you keep other costs down. Depending on where you live, you can also get a tax credit for your investment.

4 different routes to go when purchasing your first electric vehicle

1. Buy used

Electric vehicles have been around for a while now. If you’re not keen on investing in the latest technology, you can now see the track record of different EVs and make a great choice that both suits your need for space and for reliability. It should also be noted that EVs tend to be constructed at a higher and more luxurious trim level; even your used EV will hold value over time.

2. Buy oversized

New electric SUVs offer many benefits. They have a terrific range, loads of cargo space, and many of them offer significant towing capacity. If your family is growing, either in number or in inseam length, an electric SUV may be a better choice than a sedan.

3. Consider a truck

Truck manufacturers are bringing remarkable options to the electric market. These trucks also offer a “frunk” or front storage option since they don’t need space for a traditional engine.

Many new electric trucks offer seating for 5 adults. You can get a truck with a short bed for a toolbox or simply for hauling occasionally. If you run your business out of your vehicle, a new or used electric truck may be an ideal investment.

4. Consider installing your own charging port

If you have the capacity, put in your own charging port so you can charge up overnight. This is especially important if you live outside of a city; with a daily charging habit, you can easily maintain a healthy range for years to come.

Take confidence in the warranties

Many electric vehicle producers, whether they’re building SUVs, sedans or trucks, offer a decent warranty on powertrains. They offer more extensive warranties on the electronic components of these vehicles. A 100,000 mile warranty is a great reminder that manufacturers are confident in their products. If you’re buying used, make sure you get any remaining warranty coverage transferred with your title.

You will certainly need access to a mechanic; there are many moving parts on any vehicle and they’ll need maintenance and/or repair. However, the reliability reports on electric vehicles are impressive. If you don’t want a new vehicle, buy a certified pre-owned electric vehicle and drive in confidence.
