Education is a transformative power that shapes futures and opens doors to opportunities. For Nicole “NeeKKo” Lindsey, the founder of the non-profit organization Education Is Key, this truth is both a personal journey and a mission she passionately pursues to uplift underserved communities. As a first-generation college graduate, NeeKKo understands the profound impact that education can have on individuals, families, and communities. Her organization, Education Is Key, is dedicated to providing scholarships, mentorship, and community engagement programs to empower students and communities in the inner-city Los Angeles and eventually in inner cities around the world.

NeeKKo’s story is one of resilience, determination, and a deep commitment to giving back. Growing up in Los Angeles, she navigated the challenges of being the first in her family to attend college. Her experiences at UC Santa Barbara, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications, shaped her understanding of the privilege and opportunities that higher education can provide. NeeKKo’s career as a host and producer allowed her to build a platform, but it was her desire to create a lasting positive impact that led to the founding of Education Is Key.

Education Is Key was born out of NeeKKo’s vision to inspire and support students from backgrounds similar to her own. The organization focuses on fundraising for scholarships, particularly targeting students from inner-city Los Angeles. The core belief driving Education Is Key is that education extends beyond the classroom and can be a powerful tool for personal and community development.

“We are a message to the community to be educated because that is their power. Education goes beyond the classroom; whether you learn from a classroom, library, the internet, a mentor, or from life, just never stop learning,” NeeKKo explains. This philosophy underpins all the initiatives that Education Is Key undertakes, ensuring that students are encouraged to pursue knowledge in all its forms.

Key Programs and Initiatives

Education Is Key operates several key programs designed to support students and the broader community:

Scholarship Fundraising:

At the heart of Education Is Key is its scholarship fundraising efforts. Since its inception, the organization has successfully raised substantial funds to provide scholarships to deserving students. In its first year, Education Is Key raised $5,000, granting five scholarships to inner-city students. The organization has since awarded over 40 scholarships, each helping students take a significant step towards their educational goals.

We Outside Community Event:

An annual highlight is the “We Outside” community event, which promotes health, wellness, and community engagement. This free event encourages children and families to participate in sports, physical fitness, and wellness activities. It’s a celebration of healthy lifestyles and community spirit, with funds raised supporting the Education Is Key scholarship fund.

World Changers Mentorship Program:

Launched recently, the World Changers mentorship program is a co-ed initiative for students aged 14-18. This free program focuses on enrichment and scholarship, aiming to equip young people with the skills and mindset needed to succeed academically and personally. It’s an annual program that Education Is Key plans to continue offering, expanding its reach and impact each year.

Building a Team and Partnerships

While NeeKKo is the driving force behind Education Is Key, she recognizes the importance of collaboration and community support. Currently building a team that consists of dedicated women, NeeKKo also partners with other organizations and individuals to amplify the impact of her initiatives. This collaborative approach ensures that Education Is Key can reach more students and communities, providing the resources and support needed to thrive.

The Six Keys to Success

The mentorship programs under Education Is Key are structured around six key areas, known as the Six Keys to Success:

Wealth: Teaching financial literacy and the importance of economic empowerment.

Enterprise: Encouraging entrepreneurial thinking and skills.

Knowledge: Promoting continuous learning and intellectual growth.

nfluence: Developing leadership skills and the ability to effect change.

Wellbeing: Emphasizing physical and mental health.

Positivity: Fostering a positive mindset and resilience.

These pillars are designed to provide students with a holistic approach to personal and professional development, ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate the challenges of life.

In addition to the co-ed mentorship program, Education Is Key offers the Empower Him/Her mentorship program, specifically tailored for middle and high school students. This program focuses on areas such as mental health, entrepreneurship, social media literacy, civic engagement, manhood/womanhood, and self-love. It aims to empower young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve success and self-happiness in various aspects of their lives.

Looking Ahead

Education Is Key continues to grow and evolve, with NeeKKo at the helm, committed to making a difference in the lives of students and their communities. Her advice to others is simple yet profound: “If you are passionate about anything or have a feeling in your heart and/or spirit to do something great, do it! No matter if you’re scared, do not have all the answers, or are uncertain if it’ll work, do it and watch how the mission and vision begin to come together.”

NeeKKo’s journey and the impact of Education Is Key are testaments to the power of education and the importance of giving back. Through scholarships, mentorship, and community engagement, Education Is Key is transforming lives and building a brighter future for the next generation. As NeeKKo continues to expand her team and forge new partnerships, the organization’s reach and influence are set to grow, bringing the gift of education to even more students in need.
