On December 1st, 2024, the Arcadia Community Church hosted an unforgettable evening that beautifully combined the magic of music with the spirit of giving. The Christmas Charity Student Recital, organized by Dr. Yaqi Wang and Mi Zhou, brought together a diverse group of talented young musicians to celebrate the season through classical and contemporary music. The event, which began at 5 p.m., was a performance and a charity fundraiser to support local causes during the holiday season. The venue was filled with the joyous sounds of piano music, transforming the church into a haven of festive cheer and goodwill.

An Evening with Purpose

Dr. Yaqi Wang, a renowned educator and performer, is the founder of the Concert Star organization and Vice President of the International Classical Music Alliance (ICMA). This non-profit makes classical music accessible to all. Holding a doctoral degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Kansas, Dr. Wang is deeply committed to nurturing young talent and fostering a love for music. This recital beautifully showcased her mission to blend education with community engagement.

Mi Zhou, another distinguished educator, brings over a decade of teaching experience and is known for his engaging and humorous approach to complex musical concepts. His technical expertise and dedication to excellence have significantly impacted his students and audiences alike.

The recital took place at the Arcadia Community Church, where the festive Christmas decorations created a warm, inviting atmosphere. This was followed by “Sword Dance,” a dramatic and intense composition with rapid passages and striking rhythms that left a lasting impression.

A standout performance came from Olivia He, who delivered a flawless rendition of “Carnival of Venice.” Known for its virtuosic variations, the piece allowed Olivia to showcase both her technical precision and expressive flair, leaving the audience in awe. She then followed with “Long, Long Ago,” a nostalgic piece with soft, lyrical phrases that contrasted beautifully with the earlier works, evoking deep emotion.

A heartwarming moment occurred when these two sisters, Bella He, and Olivia He, performed a playful version of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” for four hands. Their synchronized playing highlighted their strong musical connection, drawing smiles from the audience.

Another enchanting performance was Grace Hao’s interpretation of “Sleeping Beauty.” The flowing melodies and delicate phrasing transported the audience into a fairy tale world, showcasing Grace’s elegance and musical maturity.

The first half of the recital concluded with W.A. Mozart’s “Ah vous dirai-je Maman Theme and Variations.” The challenging variations demonstrated the performers’ technical skill and musicality, offering a fitting end to a program that beautifully spanned classical and contemporary styles.

Mi Zhou’s Studio: A Display of Technical Mastery

In addition to Dr. Wang’s students, the recital featured performances by students from Mi Zhou’s studio, adding another layer of musical diversity to the evening. Mi Zhou, a celebrated pianist and educator with a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music, is also a well-known influencer in the classical music world. His students presented a range of works that further demonstrated the depth of talent nurtured under his guidance.

Xinling Song performed “Sonata Op. 36 No. 1, 1st Movement” by M. Clementi, a technically demanding piece that showcased the performer’s control and expressive phrasing. The performance of “Sonatina in Classic Style” by William Gillock was another highlight, with the student’s clean execution and graceful interpretation of this charming work impressing the audience.

Sunny Xie performed the third movement of Clementi’s Sonata Op. 36 No. 1, a beautiful composition blending traditional and contemporary elements, with finesse and emotional depth. Another notable performance was “LiuYang He,” arranged from a well-known Chinese Song.

Tasha Yang’s “Melancholy Reflections,” a poignant second movement by Mike Schoenmehl, displayed the performer’s ability to express deep emotion through music. One of the standout moments of the evening was the performance of another Clementi Sonata,” Op. 36 No. 6, 1st Movement”, which highlighted the student’s technical ability and musical maturity. This piece’s lyrical beauty and precision perfectly exemplify the student’s potential under Mi Zhou’s mentorship.

A Grand Finale: Dr. Wang and Mr. Zhou Perform Together

The grand finale of the recital featured an extraordinary duet performance by Dr. Yaqi Wang and Mi Zhou, who joined forces to perform several beloved Christmas carols. Their collaboration was a seamless blending of two virtuoso pianists, skillfully navigating intricate harmonies and melodies to bring the festive classics to life.
