As California channels significant funding towards the arts, educators and families across the state have a unique opportunity to integrate innovative programs that enrich early childhood education. Melinda Fornero, a renowned child development expert and founder of Music N’ Motion, is at the forefront of this movement with her in-school programs and her latest venture: the “Mama Watch Me Dance” YouTube channel. Aimed at preschoolers and kindergartners, as well as homeschooling moms, this platform is designed to foster a love for dance and movement, providing a nurturing environment filled with fun, creativity, and togetherness.
A Lifelong Passion Reignited
In her 60s, Melinda Fornero’s journey is a testament to the belief that it’s never too late to pursue your passions. When the pandemic struck, many assumed Melinda would retire, but instead, she found a renewed sense of purpose. “All I wanted was more — more to life, more children to teach,” she reflects. Her life’s work, which she describes as a crucial part of her soul, was momentarily silenced. However, this period of uncertainty led to the creation of her dance program for young children. Initially conceived as a dance app, it evolved into a YouTube channel, offering accessible and engaging content for families and educators.
The Launch of “Mama Watch Me Dance”
In June, Melinda Fornero announced the launch of “Mama Watch Me Dance,” a YouTube channel featuring her signature “mommy and me” style dance classes. Designed for children ages 2 to 5, the channel emphasizes the importance of dance in early childhood development. Melinda’s approach combines fun and educational activities, helping children develop musicality, rhythm, choreography skills, teamwork, confidence, and self-esteem.
“Through ‘Mama Watch Me Dance,’ we are creating a supportive community where parents can connect and share their experiences as their children learn and grow through dance,” Melinda explains.
The channel initially offers four free 30-minute dance classes, with moves broken into shorter segments, making it easy for parents and children to follow along.
Families can also participate in a 6-week Family Dance Challenge, learning a 3-minute dance routine to the “Mama Watch Me Dance” song, composed by Melinda’s husband, Dan Fornero, a renowned LA musician..
Aligning with Educational Standards
Melinda’s programs align with the California Physical Education Standards and offer significant benefits for early childhood education. Her work is not only about dance but also about meeting educational objectives and fostering holistic development in young children. The integration of dance into the curriculum is crucial, particularly in addressing issues like childhood obesity and the disruptions caused by the pandemic.
Inspiring a Community
Melinda Fornero’s dedication to dance education extends beyond her programs. She aims to inspire other women to pursue their dreams, regardless of age. “I want to encourage at least ONE WOMAN to continue her dream and not give up no matter what age,” she says. Melinda’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to start anew and that passion can drive us to achieve great things.
Her journey in dance began at the age of 14, and despite starting later than many of her peers, she pursued her passion with unwavering determination.
Over the years, she has developed a preschool dance curriculum that aligns with the Santa Monica Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) curriculum and has been implemented in numerous school districts, including Santa Monica Malibu Unified, Redondo Beach Unified, and Torrance Unified.
Engaging the Community
The launch of the “Mama Watch Me Dance” YouTube channel is part of a broader campaign to raise awareness about the benefits of dance in early childhood education. The channel’s content is designed to foster a sense of community among viewers, encouraging them to engage by watching videos, participating in discussions, and sharing their experiences. This initiative not only promotes the importance of dance but also supports its integration into kindergarten curricula.
Melinda Fornero’s work exemplifies the transformative power of dance in early childhood education. Her innovative programs and dedication to fostering a love for dance in young children have made a significant impact in the field. As she continues to inspire educators, parents, and children, her message is clear: it’s never too late to follow your passion and make a difference.
