2025 is just around the corner and you might be thinking about your New Year’s resolutions. A lot of people tend to use the new year as inspiration to eat healthy and workout, or even reach new personal goals. Have you ever thought about how you can incorporate more self care into your daily routine? Instead of having your goals be things that add more to your plate, maybe you are at a point in your life where you can take a little more time for yourself. No matter what phase of life you are in, everyone deserves to wind down every now and then. Starting the new year off right could mean taking up a new hobby. Crafting is the perfect hobby to stay productive and help your mind relax.
Now, crafting on a regular basis is easier said than done. Numerous people have busy schedules, whether that’s with work or with families, so finding time to craft and relax seems impossible. However, it’s important for people to prioritize their mental and physical health beyond exercising and eating healthy. Crafting can not only give you some free time to yourself, but it can help your mind become more in tune with your body. Instead of focusing on the daily stressors of life, you are putting that energy into something different. Even taking 30 minutes each day, or a few hours a week to prioritize something you enjoy is beneficial. If your mind is not healthy, neither is the rest of your body.
“The hardest part about practicing self care is finding the time to do the things that relax and calm you down. Our lives are usually pretty busy, and self care is not really etched into our daily schedules. The perfect way to relax is to incorporate it into the things you love,” says Corey Pearson, Chief Quilt Artist and Brand Ambassador at Linda’s.
Did you know that crafting has physical benefits that affect your overall well being? Studies show that crafting actually reduces cortisol levels, which are your body’s stress hormones. This means that crafting is an outlet for people to relax and not be so stressed out. Because people are so busy, anxiety and stress can manifest into something unhealthy. Crafting, no matter what way, can be an outlet for distraction. Sometimes all people need is to think about something different, and crafting is a great way to be more in tune with yourself and your creativity.
Beyond just stress levels, crafting is a way for people to have a heightened sense of accomplishment. Crafting usually has a means to an end. The journey of crafting reduces stress, and the product you make at the end is a physical sign of productivity. Because you have a finished project at the end, people feel like they truly accomplished something, which can make them feel good about themselves. Finding happiness can be in the little things, and crafting is just one example.
“Crafting is a great way to get your heart rate down and focus on something other than the usual stressors of our lives. When you put your mind to another task it can help give you a space to almost remove yourself from reality. Crocheting, going on a walk or watching your favorite movie gives you the space to not worry about the other things in life. Self care means taking care of yourself physically and mentally, and crafting is a great way to nourish your body and mind,” Pearson says.
One of the great things about crafting is that there are no rules. You can become a crocheter, quilter, sewist, painter, or whatever you find joy in. That’s the beauty of it. The opportunities are endless when you take up a hobby like crafting. Not only do you get to try and learn something new, but crafting can teach people important life lessons like patience and persistence. Crafting gives people something to work for besides work. It’s such a personal hobby, and that;s why it could be a good thing to add to your New Year’s resolutions list.
Everyone deserves a little self care from time to time, but it’s up to you to actually prioritize it. There are so many ways to take time to yourself, but crafting can help give you something to look forward to in your daily routine. Life is stressful and everyone deserves to practice self care for their body and mind. How can crafting change your life in 2025?
