You can be anything you want to be this Halloween season. As the temperatures start to cool down and things get spookier, there is no better time to put your creative skills to the test. With the holiday only a few weeks away, the clock is ticking on putting together the perfect costume and decorating your home with the scariest decorations. This might be stressful for some people, but it doesn’t have to be. Putting your own spin on things is what this holiday is all about. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars at the store, but instead you can use your creative abilities to create something from scratch. This Halloween you can try on multiple hats, and perhaps this year you’ll put on your creative one.

“The Halloween season is the premier time to play around with your creative skills. You get to be whoever you want to be, and that’s the spirit of the season. Whether it’s sewing together the spookiest costume on the block, or trying your hand at creating fall decorations, there is no shortage of opportunities,” says Corey Pearson, Chief Quilt Artist and Brand Ambassador at Linda’s.

There are no tricks when it comes to testing your creative skills. Yes, there may be roadblocks in the way, but it’s all part of the learning process. DIY-ing your costume is the premier way to be one of a kind this year. You’ve probably seen all the trendy costumes each year; from Barbie and Spiderman, to even the classic witch making things from home gives you the ability to create your own trend. Far too often are there thousands of people dressed in the same store-bought costume, but when you create something from scratch using things you already have, you have the upper hand. Instead of spending time and money at the store, chances are that you have all the supplies you need right at home to create the coolest costume.

“Because Halloween is such a DIY holiday, it is a more cost-saving and sustainable way to step out of your comfort zone. Instead of spending a pretty penny on a costume, you can use things you have lying around the house. This will give you a little more spending money for other crafts, and is a good way to upcycle. With Halloween you can try on multiple costumes, and perhaps you are dressing up this season as a master crafter,” Pearson says.

Not only is DIY-ing your costume a more cost effective route to take, it also gives you the time to create memories with your friends or family. Buying a costume at the store can be boring, but having a costume craft night at home can help create long lasting memories, and can get you into the Halloween spirit.

People are often so busy with their lives and their schedules, that they forget to take time for themselves and enjoy the season they are in. Crafting with friends, family or even by yourself can help you practice some much needed self care. Studies show that crafting can improve your mood and lower stress levels, overall helping people manage their anxiety. This proves that there are positive health benefits to making your Halloween costume at home. Not only is it saving your bank account, but it is impacting your well-being.

Crafting does take a little extra time than just buying a costume at the store, but what’s the fun in that? Making your spooky costume from scratch helps you save money, gives you the opportunity to stand out, and helps you implement a little self care into your daily routine. The benefits are pretty much endless when you sit back and think about it. Halloween gives people the opportunity to be whoever they want to be, and try on a new hat. Putting on your creative hat can help you truly dive into the spirit of the season.
